El Paso Utep Miners
College football junkies at Texas State know it was only a matter of time before Colby Carthel would lead a division. After taking over the SFA program in 2019, he faced one of college football's most talented teams, the El Paso UTEP Miners. While he was named head coach at the University of South Texas for the first time in his career, Helms made a name for himself by leading the Lions from the laughing stock of the Lone Star Conference to division champion in just three years.
Defensively, cornerback Willie Roberts earned third place - team all - as a freshman and defensive lineman Carl Williams is an FBS-level talent. Carthel has committed to bolstering his defense by adding two first-round draft picks in defensive tackle D.J. Williams and linebacker D'Vontae Davis, as well as junior college transfers.
A freshman in 2019, Amaewhule led the Miners (5-5) to victory with one sack and three tackles. Carthel was an All-Conference linebacker at Angelo State University and entered the coaching world after graduating.
Graham ran his first and only presidential campaign in 2016 and dropped out before the 2016 Republican primary, but won after announcing his support for then-Sen. Graham changed his stance on Trump in March 2017, becoming a staunch ally of the president, often making public statements in his defense. He was also known to be bipartisan and work with Democrats on issues like health care reform, immigration reform and tax reform.
He began his congressional career in 1994, when he was elected to represent South Carolina's Third Congressional District from 1995 to 2003. He happened to be in his first experience in the US military when he was stationed in West Germany as the Air Force's chief prosecutor for Europe.
The SFA won just two games in 2018 and Carthel was in for a nasty surprise when the NCAA announced that the previous team had kept an academically ineligible player off the field. Although Rupp had already made formal scholarship offers to black players in 1964, Kentucky had no African-American players in the program, and it was not until Tom Payne joined the Wildcats in 1971 that a black player finally joined the program.
Although the SFA has been a historically successful FCS program, the previous head coach Clint Conque left the program after just one season. The defensive-minded coach spent his entire playing and coaching career at Texas State.
The team plays its games at Sun Bowl Stadium, and head coach Mike Price recently retired. The university field, which opened in 1963 and has a capacity of 500 seats, is currently home to the miners' and women's football teams. It was built in 1991 and houses the women's and football teams as well as a number of other games outside football.
Although it cannot be denied that UTEP is on the bottom floor of Conference USA, one can see that the talent level of the miners has been rising rather slowly.
The program took a step forward in 2016, starting with quarterback Gavin Hardison, and took another step forward in 2017 with the signing of running back Josh McGowen and the addition of offensive line coach and former UTEP head coach Mike O'Brien. Running back Josh McGowan brings game and break ability, but the return of running back quarterback Wadley, who missed the entire last season through injury, will be a big help. Offensive lines need to be improved in 2020 for McGowan to reach his potential. Hardly any quarterback will give the offensive line an identity after two revolving-door seasons at the position.
Graham is a native of Central South Carolina and earned his doctorate in law from the University of South Korea School of Law in 1981. He has been a private practice attorney since 1983, deputy attorney general in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York from 1993 to 1995, and deputy attorney general in the United States from 1995 to 1997.
As a member of the Republican Party, Senator Graham has earned a reputation as a staunch critic of President Donald Trump and his policies. In particular, he has criticized Trump's support for abortion rights, immigration reform, and the Affordable Care Act. He has repeatedly said he does not support Trump, but has openly expressed opposition to the president's immigration, health, foreign, environmental and other issues.
In 2016, UTEP finished 10th overall in the men's Division I sports championship with a record of 5-0-1, with wins over Texas A & M - El Paso and Texas State.
